Apparently, there’s a notion out there that tall people can’t dance. This is an absurd notion! Of course, tall people can dance. The world’s tallest ballerina in the Guinness Book of World Records is Fabrice Calmels. Calmels is about 6’ 6-1/2”. Another tall ballerina is Courtney Henry at 6’ which is really tall considering the average height of a woman in the United States is 5’ 4”.
That’s one kind of dancer though. This summer, a tall man tackled ballroom dancing. At 7’ 2”, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar participated in Dancing with the Stars and he lasted half the shortened season. He’s not a professional dancer, but he’s still able to bust a move on TV.
In short, of course, tall people can dance. The key, in my opinion, is to know how to adjust for your height. For example, it might be hard to find a tall dance partner which means you might not be able to do the same moves. However, with practice, I’m sure you and your partner can find ways around a large height difference. Abdul-Jabbar and his 5’ 6” partner Lindsay Arnold certainly did. This does become less of an issue if you’re not doing a partner dance such as Latin or ballroom. Plus, if you get enough tall people, I’m sure you could put together an awesome hip-hop group.
