Does Yoga Make You Taller?

Ain’t nothing better than a morning yoga session to stretch you out in the mornings.

Yoga has been growing like a wildfire; over 80 million people in the United States tried yoga in 2016 and in 2017 that number is projected to almost double.

So why has yoga’s popularity grown so much? It might be because of its endless benefits. The American Osteopathic Association have recently written about the benefits of yoga, some these benefits include:

-Increased flexibility

-Increased muscle strength and tone

-Improved respiration, energy and vitality

-Maintaining a balanced metabolism

-Weight reduction

-Cardio and circulatory health

-Improved athletic performance

-Protection from injury

Those seem to be benefits that the majority of us yearn for. None of those benefits, however, say “you will grow taller”. It’s been said that the reason people say that “yoga makes you taller” is because yoga improves posture.

A person’s posture does make them seem to stand a little taller, but it doesn’t actually make you taller. Posture is very important in overall health, so if you are looking to improve your posture, yoga is a good solution. If you are looking to actually grow taller, yoga isn’t a good solution.

Although Mythbusters haven’t done an episode on the myth “yoga makes you taller”, it doesn’t mean we can’t prove it wrong. My good buddy science and logic, usually do a pretty good job at decerning myths. Science has proven that stretching doesn’t actually stretch bones, which means that logically, you can’t get taller just by stretching.

Just because yoga doesn’t make you taller, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. Yoga still has countless benefits that, I’m sure, we all can benefit from.
