Break dancing can seem daunting to anyone, but especially when you are an extra foot from the ground compared to your fellow dancers. Does height actually make a difference when it comes to break dancing?
Similar to gymnastics, break dancing tends to be easier when for those who are lighter and smaller. However, the consensus on many online forums is that what matters most when it comes to break dancing is strength, not height. The main area of strength that you should focus on when learning to break dance is first, your core. Your core muscles, or your back and abs, are what are going to help you with your balance and give you the strength to hold yourself in various positions for an extended amount of time.
Also, look into wrist conditioning. You will need strong wrists to hold up your body weight. Last, your most important foundation is your handstand, which incorporates needed strength in your shoulders, forearms, and wrists. Basic exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, crunches, and planks can help with these different areas.
While shorter individuals may excel in speed when it comes to breakdancing. (Shorter limbs don’t need as much time to extend through various moves as long ones.) It is recommended to focus on your own style and find your strengths, whether that is swagger, rhythm or creativity. Different groundwork moves can be mastered over time, no matter how tall or short you are, so don’t give up!
